A Message From Your 2009-10 President DuWayne Greene My fellow Meetings Industry Professionals!
In my last letter we began a “Texas Six Step” on making this a “DARING” year as a Chapter.
Step #1 was “Facing Realities” and it spoke to the reality of where we are as a Chapter and as a society as a whole. The second step I’d like us to take is “Dare To Let Go”!
Still keeping our goal in sight, there are times when we have to let go of the way that things have been done in the past and venture forth into new or at least different methods of doing them. In order for us to do this we sometime need to let go of the past….old habits, fears, limitations, etc.
How many times have we heard someone say, “I’m too old to ___!”
(translation) “I’m afraid of trying because I may fail and I’m going to let my fear limit me!”
“I’m just not good at _______!!”
(translation) “I’m afraid or too comfortable to do what it takes to become better and I’m disguising it by acting humble!”
“I’m already so busy with what is on my plate that there are just not enough hours in the day to ____.”
(translation) “I’m comfortable in my routine and I don’t want to change even if it could mean a brighter future, being more productive, improving myself or being better at what I do!”
“We’ve never grown more than ___ percent! You’re asking the impossible!”
(translation) “I don’t want to think about the time and effort it’s going to take to change!”
I DARE you to recognize the real meaning of the things that we all sometimes say! Listen to what you hear and say today and translate them into their true meaning….the fear, fake humility, or the convenience of being comfortable!
In order for us to move forward, letting go of the past is probably one of the most important steps in achieving any goal! The excuses that we use sometimes become the very things that anchor us to the past instead of letting us boldly move ahead towards new and exciting times. The excuses that we use in effect become self serving and the self limiting baggage that prevents us from grabbing the future with both hands! They may be part of human nature but they can become a harmful part of what we need to accomplish to be successful!
I remember an old saying that says “When you come to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on!” I’d like to change our thinking and say “When you come to the end of your rope, LET GO!” You’ll usually find that solid ground is just inches beneath your feet and the only thing from keeping you from moving forward is the knot you’re hanging on to!
“The greatest mistake you can make in life is to be continually fearing you will make one.”
Elbert Hubbard US author (1856 - 1915)
Step #2 – Dare To Let Go! (Additional steps to follow!)
Have a wonderful day…..Go ahead….I DARE YOU!!!! DuWayne
